  2. 2How often are you physically exhausted?
  3. 3How often are you emotionally exhausted?
  4. 4How often do you think: "I can’t take it anymore"?
  5. 5How often do you feel worn out?
  6. 6How often do you feel weak and susceptible to illness?

What is the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory?

The Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI) was developed by Kristensen and colleagues in Denmark to measure physical and psychological exhaustion. This test uses its six-question personal burnout scale.

Each answer scores from 0 ("never") to 100 ("always"), and the score is the average. A score of 50 or more is a commonly used research cut-point rather than an official clinical threshold, so treat the result as a guide.

Burnout is not a medical diagnosis. The World Health Organization describes it as an occupational phenomenon resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been managed.

How the score works

ScoreResultWhat it usually means
0–49LowYour answers suggest a low level of burnout right now.
50–74ModerateYour score is in the range researchers commonly treat as burnout. Look at what is draining you, and consider talking it through with someone.
75–100HighYour score suggests a high level of exhaustion. Talking to a professional can help you find a way to recover.

FAQ

Common questions

What burnout score is high?

On this scale, researchers commonly treat 50 or above as burnout and 75 or above as high burnout. These are research conventions, not official clinical cut-offs.

Is burnout the same as depression?

No. Burnout is exhaustion tied mainly to work or caring demands, while depression affects mood and interest across life. They can overlap; if your mood is low too, try the depression test.

Are my answers saved?

No. The test runs in your browser and your answers are never sent to us or stored.

Can my company help?

Many employers now offer confidential therapy as a benefit. Our guide to workplace mental health explains what helps.
